Khwaja Ahmad Hosain is an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and one of Pakistan’s leading lawyers. He has over 25 years’ experience in corporate law, international and domestic arbitration, and commercial, civil and constitutional litigation. He has a Bachelor in Arts (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) from Oxford University and is a Barrister at Law (Lincoln’s Inn, called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1991). He also has a MA from the University of London (Area Studies – Islamic Societies and Cultures and Islamic Law). He has practiced in Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore.

He heads the Lahore office of the Firm. His practice covers a broad spectrum of work. The current focus includes litigation in the Supreme Court and High Court, international commercial and treaty arbitration, mergers and acquisitions, corporate law, project finance, transaction structuring, commercial litigation, oil and gas law, telecommunications law, insurance law, sports law, and media law.

His recent significant cases in the Supreme Court include the Orange Train case, where he represented civil society against the Government, and another case involving the scope of the fundamental right to do business under Article 18 of the Constitution. He has also recently acted in a High Court case involving the New York Convention where the ambit of the public policy exception to recognition of a foreign arbitration award was under consideration.

He has served as Deputy and Additional Attorney General of Pakistan where he regularly appeared in the Supreme Court. He was involved during this time in a treaty arbitration hearing which took place in Paris and in the 21st Amendment case which was heard by the Full Court.

He has acted since 2004 for the Pakistan Cricket Board (“PCB”) on its corporate and commercial matters and been involved as a member of its Bid Committee for sale of sponsorship and media rights. He also regularly advises and acts for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (“SNGPL”) in connection with their disputes and agreements and recently successfully represented SNGPL in over 50 review petitions in the Supreme Court. Zurich Insurance, Facebook, Descon Group and Mazars are also among his clients. He has acted for bidders in past privatisations undertaken by the Government and regularly advises sellers and buyers in connection with share and business sale agreements and structures.

Apart from his legal work, he sits as a non-executive director and Chairman of the Human Resource Committee on the Board of BIAFO Industries Limited. He was a member of the Adjunct Law Faculty at the Lahore University of Management Sciences for 10 years where he taught a Legal Practice course that he designed. He is a CEDR Accredited Mediator. His articles on legal issues appear regularly in leading English language daily newspapers including The News and he is also a contributor to South Asia magazine and The Wire web news ervice. He is a Trustee of the Noon Foundation, a charitable foundation established to assist Pakistan scholars wishing to study at Oxford and Cambridge.

He has been ranked as one of the leading lawyers in the corporate and commercial sector by Chambers and Partners and also recognised in the Legal 500 as a leading lawyer in the Dispute Resolution and insurance sector.
